‘Materials, Messages & Meaning’ Group Exhibition at R-Space Gallery, Lisburn.

Materiality was the starting point for ‘In Between’, a hollow double-form vessel constructed using fine linen thread. Spun in Ulster and left both undyed and unbleached, this natural linen-grey fibre suggests a sense of rigour and structure. The transitionary nature of this piece mark its journey from fibre to fabric to form and celebrates how process and craftsmanship enable these changes to take place. The first transition marks the change from fibre into fabric - the act of continuously inter-looping the linen thread until a knitted fabric vessel is formed. The soft walled slouchy structure then faces a second transition from fabric into the final form. Through inflating and starching the forms, I enable them to become stiff yet still maintain the malleability and tactility of cloth. ‘In Between’ marries fibre with form, showcasing the inherent qualities of linen and drawing attention to the process of making. The secondary hollow form, contained in between the walls of the larger vessel prompting the viewer to take a second look and to think about the process of its creation. The outer vessel is crumpled and distorted, taking advantage of the inherent nature of linen to crease whilst the inner sphere remains untouched and therefore perfectly rounded. The airy structure of the knit encourages light to diffuse through the piece, casting flat shadows that grow and shrink with the passing of time.
